University of Akron Amateur Radio Club enhances student experience with new transceiver donation

The University of Akron Amateur Radio Club (UAARC) recently received a generous donation of an ICOM IC-7300 transceiver from DX Engineering (DXE). This modern transceiver will be a significant upgrade to the club's current equipment, enhancing the students' experience as they explore amateur radio on the shortwave bands.

With the new transceiver, licensed members of the club can participate in a variety of activities, including contests where they contact amateur radio operators from across the country and around the world. These activities often involve voice communication, but with advanced computer interfacing provided by the new equipment, students will also be able to engage in digital communications. This allows for exchanging information under conditions that would be impossible using voice alone.

Amateur radio has been a lifelong hobby for many prominent scientists, engineers, and astronauts, serving as the foundation for their professional careers. UAARC provides opportunities for anyone interested in obtaining an amateur radio license, with members able to study for their exams and learn from experienced operators. For those not yet licensed, the club offers exciting activities like receiving images from weather satellites or participating in supervised radio operations.

The UAARC meets in the Auburn Science and Engineering Center, room 530, every Monday at 7:00 pm.
