Biography

Gediminas Gasparavičius is an Associate Professor of art history who teaches classes on modern and contemporary art, art theory, art in the global context, along with general surveys of art history. He occasionally offers special topics courses on performance and participatory art, collaborative art practice, and nineteenth-century art.

His current research focuses on the intersections of contemporary art, politics, and mimetic strategies. Together with Maia Toteva and Tom Williams, he is a co-editor of the forthcoming book Walking with the Enemy: The Art of Subversive Mimicry in the Post-Truth Era (Manchester University Press, 2025). The volume addresses the historical origins and current issues of subversive mimicry in art and cultural activism and asks the question why this strategy has gained momentum in the so-called “post-truth era.” Gasparavičius’s other writings appeared in journals Public Art Dialogue and Art Criticism, the edited book NSK from Kapital to Capital: An Event of the Final Decade of Yugoslavia (MIT Press), art magazines, and gallery publications. In recent years, he has presented papers and chaired panels on participatory art, politics, and mimetic strategies at conferences organized by CAA (College Art Association), ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies), AAH (Association of Art Historians), ASEEES (Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies), AATSEEL (American Association of Teachers of Slavic and Eastern European Languages), and elsewhere.

Dr. Gasparavičius grew up and received his undergraduate degree in Lithuania before moving to the U.S. for graduate studies. He began working at the Myers School of Art in 2012 where he is currently coordinator of Art History Area. Before his appointment at Myers, he taught at College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, MA), Stony Brook University (Stony Brook, NY), and Kaunas Art Institute (Kaunas, Lithuania).
