Chemistry

The Department offers courses of study leading to the degrees of M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry. We approach our graduate education using a very interdisciplinary approach that prepares graduates to be independent researchers, provides them with an education with both breadth and depth in training in chemistry, and just as importantly, and focuses on the development of good communication skills.

In collaboration with the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry offers a chemical physics option as part of the chemistry Ph.D. program. Cross-disciplinary training is promoted through continued collaborations with The Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science, Institute for Biomedical Engineering Research, Center for Environmental Studies, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and the Integrated Bioscience program.

Admission Requirements

• Hold a baccalaureate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field
• Three letters of recommendation
• Statement of purpose
• General GRE scores required

Application Deadline

MASTER'S APPLICANTS

• June 1 for Fall enrollment
• November 15 for Spring enrollment

DOCTORAL APPLICANTS

Review of applicants for Fall enrollment begins February 1 and October 1 for Spring enrollment. The application package must be complete for review to occur.

Additional Information

We have strong interdisciplinary interactions with related departments such as Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Physics and Biology. We typically have 80-100 graduate students, as well as postdoctoral and other visiting scientists, from around the country and the world in our program.

Support in our program is guaranteed for five years for students in good academic standing, in the form of either teaching or research assistantships for the academic year and the summer. In addition, tuition and most fees are waived.

Assistantship/Scholarship Information

Not all departments offer graduate assistantships. Students should inquire with the department directly to determine assistantship availability.

Financial Aid Information

Paying for college is a vital part of the education process. It is important to be informed of the many sources of aid available. Student loans are available to degree-seeking graduate students. Information on student loans can be found through the Office of Student Financial Aid. The Office of Student Financial Aid is located in Simmons Hall.
